Superfoods To Prevent Glaucoma And Enhance Vision

Glaucoma is a serious eye disorder that damages the optic nerve. The optic nerve transmits visual information from the eye to the brain. If left untreated, glaucoma can progress to blindness. It usually occurs when fluid accumulates in the anterior region of the eye. This additional fluid increases the pressure on your eye, which causes optic nerve damage. 

According to a study, India has a glaucoma burden of 11.9 million people and an 8.9 million blind population. Glaucoma accounts for 12.8% of blindness in India. This year, World Glaucoma Week took place from 10 March to 16 March to promote awareness about this eye ailment. 

Dr Raksha J Vaishnav, Senior Consultant – Glaucoma and Cataract, Nethradhama Super Speciality Eye Hospital said, “While there is no cure for glaucoma, early detection and treatment can help slow down its progression and prevent further damage to the eyes.” 

With the guidance of Dr Vaishnav, we’ve compiled a list of 5 superfoods that will help you prevent glaucoma and improve your general eye health. 

1. Leafy greens, vegetables

Green leafy vegetables, such as spinach, kale, and broccoli, are high in antioxidants. These antioxidants help to protect your eyes from free radicals. Dr. Vaishnav added, “They also contain nutrients like lutein and zeaxanthin, which are essential for maintaining good vision and preventing age-related macular degeneration, another common cause of blindness”.

2. Fish and Lean Meats

According to Dr. Vaishnav, fish such as salmon, tuna, and sardines are high in omega-3 fatty acids. These fatty acids are needed for good eye health. They serve to reduce inflammation and increase blood flow to the eyes, thus preventing glaucoma. Dr Vaishnav further added “Lean meats like chicken and turkey are also good sources of protein, which is essential for building and repairing tissues in the eyes”.

3. Fruit & Berries

Oranges, strawberries, and blueberries are excellent sources of vitamin C and can help prevent glaucoma. Vitamin C helps to prevent cell damage and maintain healthy blood vessels in the eyes. Berries and fruits are also high in fibre, which lowers the incidence of diabetes, a key risk factor for glaucoma. 

4. Nuts & seeds

Despite their small size, nuts and seeds give substantial advantages to eye health. Dr. Vaishanav stated that “nuts and seeds like almonds, walnuts, and sunflower seeds are rich in vitamin E, which is essential for maintaining eye health.” This vitamin protects cells from oxidative stress and can reduce the progression of cataracts, another prevalent cause of vision loss. 

5. Whole grains and legumes

Whole grains like brown rice, oats, and quinoa, as well as legumes like beans and lentils, are high in zinc, which is necessary for good vision. Dr. Vaishnav stated that zinc aids in the synthesis of melanin, a protective pigment in the eyes that blocks harmful UV radiation. It also influences the growth and function of the retina, an important component of the eye.” 

Dr Vaishnav advised on including the aforementioned superfoods in our diet, and minimising consumption of processed and high-fat meals. “These food items can raise the chance of having high blood pressure or diabetes, both of which can lead to glaucoma,” Dr. Vaishnav explained. “While there is no guaranteed way to prevent glaucoma, incorporating these superfoods into our diet can help in maintaining good eye health and reducing the risk of developing this sight-threatening disease. Along with frequent eye exams and prescribed treatments, a healthy and balanced diet can help preserve your vision and improve your general quality of life.
