SMILE
Technique: A femtosecond laser creates a small, lens-shaped piece of tissue (lenticule) from within the cornea. The surgeon removes the lenticule through a tiny side incision.
Recovery: Quicker than PRK and may result in less dry eye than LASIK because it involves fewer surface nerves.
Suitability: An option for those with higher prescriptions or who are not candidates for LASIK, and can be good for active individuals.
SMILE Pro
Technique: A faster, enhanced version of SMILE that uses an advanced algorithm for more precise and faster correction.
Recovery: Very quick, often with full vision the next day.
Suitability: A more modern, efficient version of the SMILE procedure, suitable for patients with high cylindrical power.
PRK – Photorefractive Keratectomy
Technique: The outermost layer of the cornea (epithelium) is removed, and the laser reshapes the tissue underneath. No flap is created.
Recovery: Longer and may involve more discomfort than LASIK or SMILE. A contact lens is used for protection during the healing period.
Suitability: Ideal for patients with thin corneas, high prescriptions, or those involved in contact sports, and it has a long-term safety profile without flap-related complications.
LASIK
- Technique: A flap is created in the cornea, a laser reshapes the tissue underneath, and the flap is then repositioned.
- Recovery: Generally faster than PRK, with most vision improvement in the first 24 hours.
- Suitability: Popular due to fast recovery, but flap creation makes it unsuitable for some patients with thin corneas or those who are prone to dry eyes
